Student Oath

Written by the Entering Class of 2025

As we enter the profession of medicine,
we embrace the duties and privileges entrusted to us today, tomorrow, and for all time.

To my patients:

I pledge to be your advocate, empowering you to make choices that reflect your values and beliefs.

I commit to valuing the complexities of your story and humanity while cherishing the experience of participating in your care.

I will work alongside you to support your wellbeing, recognizing that clinical training can never substitute the lived experiences of illness and suffering.

I promise to earn and honor your trust by keeping sacred the confidences you place in me.

To my profession:

I embrace the privilege to learn from my patients and colleagues, uncover new knowledge, and disseminate wisdom to future generations of diverse physicians.

I acknowledge my position as one of many in my patients’ care and pledge to support my collaborators through mutual respect, deference, and accountability.

I commit to recognizing the complex historical foundation of our field and the necessity of practicing medicine as an art.

I will engage critically with my profession, acting as an agent of change to promote inclusivity, a culture of care, and the betterment of medicine as a whole.

To society:

I dedicate myself to the service of humanity—acknowledging injustices, including those perpetuated by medicine—and promise to use this white coat as neither a weapon nor a shield.

I will use the knowledge and power entrusted to me to advocate for those most vulnerable and champion accessible, equitable, and sustainable care for all.

I promise to pursue truth and scientific progress for the advancement of population and community health.

I vow to uphold my professional integrity, even under threat, and I will always make decisions guided by the best available knowledge and sound scientific principles.

To myself:

I will recognize my limitations and act within my capabilities.

I commit to practicing humility, remembering that I am a lifelong student.

I will safeguard myself so that I may care for others.

I promise to anchor myself in the humanity I share with my patients so that I may find joy in healing.

May I hold fast to the enthusiasm and idealism
with which I now take this oath.
