The School of Medicine offers a variety of degree programs to accommodate every student’s individual career goals.
Doctoral and combined degree programs
Doctor of Medicine (MD) (four-year): The MD degree equips you for a career as a physician. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, our graduates possess qualities of personality — compassion, emotional stability and a responsible attitude — essential to an effective professional life.
Combined Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy (MD/PhD): The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) equips you for a career of scientific investigation combined with the practice of medicine. Apply to the MSTP when you submit your application to medical school or apply later to transfer into the program after you have spent time in medical school and feel comfortable with a commitment to a career that combines science and medicine.
Combined Doctor of Medicine and Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MD/MSCI): The Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) is designed as a one to three year full or part-time degree program for young investigators committed to pursuing academic careers in clinical research. The unique program combines didactic coursework with mentored research and career development opportunities and provides students with the knowledge and tools to excel in the areas of clinical investigation most relevant to their careers. Individuals who participate in a CRTC training program (i.e. Postdoctoral MTPCI, KL2, TL1 Intensive, or K12) are eligible to pursue the MSCI degree as their didactic course of study and do not need to complete a separate application. The MSCI is also available as a stand-alone program to individuals not participating in a CRTC training program.
Combined Doctor of Medicine and Master of Population Health Sciences (MD/MPHS): This five-year combined degree program focuses on clinical epidemiology, quantitative analysis, biostatistics, research methods, research ethics, and health equity and disparities. Advisors for the program are Graham Colditz, DrPH, MD, MPH, professor and chief of the Department of Surgery’s Division of Public Health Sciences, and Allison King, MD, MPH, professor of education, medical director of the Survivorship Program at Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center and associate director for medical students. Tuition is waived for medical students in good standing.
Combined Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health (MD/MPH): This program covers all the foundational areas of public health including policy, behavior, environment, epidemiology, biostatistics, planning, evaluation and research. The five-year combined degree is performed in association with the nationally accredited degree program in the Brown School of Social Work. Angela Hobson, PhD, MPH, Associate Dean for Public Health and Teaching Professor, is advisor for the program. The degree culminates in completion of an independent scholarly project and exam. Scholarships are available for covering additional tuition costs.
