First-Generation Medical Student Association

The First-Generation Medical Student Association will be an affinity group for WashU medical students who self-identify as a first-generation college student, a student from a low-income background, or both. Despite on-going efforts to increase diversity in medicine, first-generation and/or low-income medical students remain underrepresented and continue to face unique challenges that permeate every aspect of their medical training. The purpose of this student organization is to uplift medical students from these backgrounds through academic and professional networking opportunities as well as career development workshops tailored to each phase the Gateway curriculum. The mission of the First-Generation Medical Student Association strongly supports WashU SOM’s commitment to build a diverse and inclusive community of future leaders in biomedicine as it aims to empower, advance, and celebrate the career and professional development of first-generation and/or low-income student doctors.
