MedVets

The MedVets student group will be dedicated to supporting the well-being and success of medical student veterans and active service members. By building a strong sense of community, the group will provide a vital network for students navigating the challenges of medical school while maintaining ties to military service. MedVets will host informational sessions and networking events that connect students with opportunities in military medicine and programs like the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), helping them explore fulfilling career paths in this unique field. The group will also raise awareness of critical issues, such as veteran health disparities and the mental health crisis affecting veterans, encouraging a deeper understanding of these challenges within the medical student body. Through community outreach and volunteer activities, MedVets will partner with local veteran grassroots organizations, giving students the chance to make a tangible impact while earning credit for their efforts (HEJ credit). In addition to direct service, MedVets will advocate for curriculum changes that better prepare future doctors to care for veterans and push for admissions policies that recognize the unique skills and experiences veteran applicants bring to medicine. By fostering mentoring relationships and promoting advocacy efforts, MedVets will help pave the way for veterans interested in pursuing careers in medicine, enhancing the diversity and strength of the medical profession. Ultimately, MedVets will contribute to the overall well-being of its members by providing a supportive network, creating professional opportunities, and fostering a sense of purpose and community involvement.
