SIGP aspires to cultivate, encourage, and further develop medical student interest in the field of pathology and laboratory medicine by offering students opportunities outside of the classroom to explore the many facets of the pathology specialty. Pathology is not a core rotation at WashU, and students currently lack opportunities to learn, explore and understand the variety of careers in pathology. While the second year pathology course offers an introduction to the field and a wealth of practical pathology information, this group will offer an even earlier and continued exposure throughout medical school. This involves hands-on approaches to learning about aspects of the field by offering interested students opportunities in shadowing, lunch talks with faculty, residents, and fellows, and skills workshops. These activities, and other individualized endeavors such as student-faculty mentorship pairings, will foster professional relationships between students and faculty, and allow for students to fully explore pathology as a specialty choice for their professional medical careers.
