Sun Protection Outreach Teaching by Students (SPOTS)

The Sun Protection Outreach Teaching by Students (SPOTS) group works in partnership with Saint Louis University medical students to teach local middle- and high-school students about early detection of and preventative measures against skin cancer in order to increase their knowledge of and affect their behaviors toward sun protection. Although it is largely preventable, skin cancer continues to increase in incidence annually–one in five Americans will get skin cancer over the course of their lifetime. In addition to an interactive presentation, SPOTS also engages students with fun games, informative handouts, personalized UV skin analysis, video testimonies from St. Louis skin cancer survivors, and even samples of sun protective lotions, bronzers, and clothing.
