What is community engagement?

Community engagement describes collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.

What is service learning?

The service-learning requirement for medical students involves the following components:

  1. Participate in service activities that respond to community-identified concerns;
  2. Preparation; and
  3. Reflection on the relationships between activity participation, medical school curriculum, and the roles of citizens and medical professionals.
What are specific WashU medical student requirements?

Required to volunteer at three separate sites during Phase I of their curriculum, and are involved in larger, coordinated efforts during specific clerkships.
