Community engagement describes collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.
The service-learning requirement for medical students involves the following components:
- Participate in service activities that respond to community-identified concerns;
- Preparation; and
- Reflection on the relationships between activity participation, medical school curriculum, and the roles of citizens and medical professionals.
Required to volunteer at three separate sites during Phase I of their curriculum, and are involved in larger, coordinated efforts during specific clerkships.
