The Office of Medical Student Research provides advising and support for MD students to participate in a number of research opportunities. These include up to 16-week-long dedicated research electives during Phase 2 or Phase 3, year-long research programs, and dual degree programs including the Medical Scientist Training Program. To be eligible for these programs and funding, you must be in good academic standing, and all research must be conducted under the direction of a full-time faculty member at the School of Medicine.
- Year-Long Research Programs (YRP): MSCI, MPHS, MD5, and MSBMI
The YRP protects a full year for medical students to pursue a scholarly project under faculty mentorship. Many pursue a second degree during this period. All students receive free tuition and stipends are available. - Biomedical Research Electives during Phase 2
Up to four months of dedicated time is available during Phase 2 for students to undertake a biomedical research project. - EXPLORE Electives during Phase 3
Medical students can take up to four months during Phase 3 in contiguous or non-contiguous periods to pursue a scholarly project. - Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)
Information related to the MSTP is available at the above link. - Learn about other dual degree opportunities
A wide range of additional degrees are available for medical students with particular interests and career goals. OMSR facilitates and streamlines these dual degree programs. - Travel to present scholarly project work
OMSRS provides up to $1,700 per student to travel for the purpose of presenting scholarly work at conferences, $500 for a regional conference and $1,200 for a national conference. All travel must be pre-approved by OMSRS and applications must be submitted at least two months before planned travel.
