Medical Muslim Students Association
The Medical Muslim Students Association (MMSA) is a student organization dedicated to fostering community, cultural understanding, and service through the exploration of Islam and its intersection with medicine. MMSA seeks to provide educational opportunities and outreach that promote awareness of Muslim experiences in healthcare and contribute to inclusive, compassionate patient care. The organization welcomes participation from all students, faculty, and staff of all faiths and belief systems who wish to learn about Islamic traditions, engage in interfaith dialogue, and advance mutual respect and understanding within the medical community.
Medical School Musical

Medical Students for Choice
Medical Students For Choice is an organization that aims to educate WUSM students about contraception and abortion, as well as encourage them to explore their personal beliefs about the full range of reproductive rights.
Medical Students for Understanding and Destigmatizing Substance Use Disorders (MedSUD)
The mission of MedSUD is to empower and equip physicians-in-training to recognize and treat substance use disorders and their sequelae both in their patients and in their colleagues, to get stigma out of the way of better understanding and treatment of substance use disorders, and to advocate for better policies around SUD.
MedSpan
MedSpan is a student group dedicated to improving medical Spanish fluency in healthcare providers through a series of educational sessions. Completing the series of sessions will prepare students to take the Clinician Cultural and Linguistic Assessment (CCLA), which provides certification to speak with Spanish-speaking patients and families without the use of an interpreter. We welcome all students.
Music in Medicine Initiative (WUSM)
The WUSM Music in Medicine Initiative is an organization composed of medical students who perform music as a form of community service. We perform regularly for patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, STL Children’s Hospital, and more!
Narrative Medicine Interest Group
The Narrative Medicine Interest Group circles around the idea of story that plays at many levels within healthcare and medicine, through exploration of humanities and medicine, literature and close listening, and reflective writing.
Native Student Association
The Native Student Association is a student organization that promotes equitable healthcare and cultural understanding by advancing the health and well-being of Native and Indiginous communities. Through service and education, our organization fosters leadership and advocacy skills among medical students and provides an inclusive forum for all who are committed to improving health equity and access to care.
Neonatology Interest Group
The goal of Neonatology Interest Group is to provide opportunities for preclinical students to learn more about neonatal medicine, how to get involved in neonatal research, and the educational pathways to become a neonatologist.
Neurosurgery Interest Group
The purpose of the Neurosurgery Interest Group is to provide a forum for students to explore their interests in the broad field of neurosurgery, and to foster interaction between senior faculty and the student body.
Obstetrics and Gynecology Interest Group (OGIG)
The purpose of the Ob/Gyn Interest Group (OGIG) is to foster interest in and provide information pertaining to the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
Oncology Interest Group
The purpose of the Oncology Interest Group (OIG) is to foster interest and create awareness of clinical practice and research in oncology, providing many diverse pathways in the practice of medicine through medical, radiation, and surgical oncology.
Ophthalmology Interest Group
The purpose of the Ophthalmology Interest Group (OIG) is not only to foster interest in ophthalmology but also to provide medical students with a better understanding of the specialty.
Orthopedic Surgery Interest Group
The Orthopedic Surgery Interest Group (OSIG) provides students with an opportunity to learn about orthopedic surgery and interact with current residents and attendings. Throughout the year, OSIG hosts various events, ranging from resident panels to interactive procedure nights where students learn to work with tools and perform mock procedures. We also facilitate abundant shadowing opportunities to allow students to explore the field and learn from residents. OSIG strives not only to give students exposure to orthopedic surgery, but also to further their interest in the field.
Palliative Care Interest Group
The Palliative Care Interest Group seeks to help its members learn about an incredibly meaningful and impactful area of medicine that seeks to relieve suffering through promoting quality of life and uplifting patient and family values. However, many medical students are either unaware of what palliative care is or have misconceptions about the field. This student group aims to enhance student understanding of palliative care, educate students on career trajectories within palliative care, and overall, emphasize the importance of quality of life in providing patient-centered care.
Pediatric Interest Group (PIG)
The Pediatric Interest Group (PIG) serves to broaden students’ exposure to the field of pediatrics, improving awareness of the specialties and career opportunities that exist within this broad division of medicine.
Pediatric Life Savers
Pediatric Life Savers teaches CPR classes to the families of infants in the NICU of St. Louis Children’s Hospital so that these primary caretakers learn how to respond to certain medical emergencies prior to taking their infants home.

Who are the Peer Advocates?
Peer Advocates (PAs) serve as accessible listeners for their fellow medical students. They help fellow students navigate mistreatment reporting systems, mental and physical health support, academic guidance, & other student resources.

Perinatal Project
The goal of the Perinatal Project is to provide opportunities for interested students to explore the fields of obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, and the patient experience through relationships with expectant mothers staying in the antepartum unit.

The Science and Healthcare Abilities Coalition (SHAC) is a student organization that advances awareness, education, and advocacy for individuals with disabilities and chronic illnesses with the aim of improving healthcare for people of all abilities.
Sickle Cell Hotspotting
Sickle Cell Hotspotting works with sickle cell patients identified in clinic or in the hospital by providers as potentially benefiting from follow-up to address social determinants of health. Medical students will contact them for follow-up.
South Asian Medical Students Association
The South Asian Medical Students Association (SAMoSA) is a student organization dedicated to fostering cultural understanding, inclusion, and community through the celebration of South Asian heritage. SAMoSA hosts social, cultural, and professional events that promote awareness of South Asian traditions and contributions to medicine while encouraging cross-cultural dialogue across the campus community.
Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN)
The Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) organizes and sponsors a wide range of activities for students interested in learning more about careers in neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry.
Student Interest Group in Pathology (SIGP)
The purpose of the Student Interest Group in Pathology is to provide a forum for students to explore their interests in the fields of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and foster meaningful interactions between senior faculty and students. Through organized events including career panel discussions featuring pathologists from various specialties, faculty-led talks and networking sessions, shadowing opportunities, interactive content discussions such as gross-microscopic correlations, autopsy conferences, lab tours, and resident meetings, we aim to enhance pre-clinical exposure to the Pathology department and promote early mentorship.
Student National Medical Association (SNMA)

Students for Sight
The purpose of Students for Sight is to connect and collaborate with local groups that are dedicated to helping youth who are blind and visually impaired and their families. Specifically, to empower these children and teenagers to reach their full potential and help them build a community of support. This will be accomplished by helping recruit volunteers to staff the regularly scheduled events at the Delta Gamma Center, plan new events for the Delta Gamma Center, and potentially partner with other organizations such as the Missouri School for the Blind if there is a need.
Sun Protection Outreach Teaching by Students (SPOTS)
The Sun Protection Outreach Teaching by Students (SPOTS) group works with SLU med students to teach local middle- and high-school students about early detection of and preventative measures against skin cancer.
Surgery Interest Group (SIG)
The Surgery Interest Group (SIG) is sponsored by the Department of Surgery with an aim of allowing students to learn more about surgery as a career before clinical rotations begin.
Unhoused Health
The purpose of Unhoused Health is to create a centralized and official student group interested in unhoused public service and street medicine. Currently, there are few opportunities for students to be involved in unhoused outreach or volunteering, and this student group would serve as a centralized core of students that will create opportunities to learn about the unique challenges unhoused people face, both generally and specifically in terms of seeking medical care. This club will allow students to engage with unhoused people and learn what it is like to live unhoused in St. Louis. This club will expand the diversity of educational experiences, especially those related to health equity and structural barriers.
Urology Interest Group (UIG)
The Urology Interest Group (UIG) is dedicated to providing medical students with opportunities to learn about and experience the unique field of Urology. Throughout the year, UIG will provide students with: opportunities to interact with Urology faculty and residents, information about the various areas of specialization within Urology, guidance on how to prepare resumes for application into Urology residency, and surgical technique practice in dedicated skills labs. UIG hopes to broaden student exposure to the field, while providing opportunities for mentorship and research.
Vascular Surgery Interest Group
The goal of the Vascular Surgery Interest Group (VSIG) organization is to provide information and hands-on experience to medical students regarding the field of vascular surgery. This will include surgical skills sessions, presentations from residents and faculty covering contemporary vascular surgery, as well as promoting an interface between medical students and faculty to discuss the trajectory for students interested in pursuing this field.
WashU Gardening Club, The GanGreen Thumbs
Have you ever experienced the heartbreak of witnessing your “invincible” succulent stage a dramatic exit? Not sure why you can read a 12-lead EKG but not a slightly yellow leaf? Sick and tired of using dried-up or store-bought herbs in your cooking? Look no further. Welcome to the GanGreen Thumbs, WashU’s med school’s only gardening club. Our club is dedicated to helping med school students discover the art of caring for plants. We’re here to share practical gardening knowledge, skills, hands-on support, and to build a community where students can share successes, troubleshoot challenges, and take meaningful breaks from medical school. Together, we’ll build and care for a community garden, which you’ll be able to access for all your vegetable and herb needs.
Wilderness Medicine Interest Group (WMIG)
The Wilderness Medicine Interest Group (WMIG) provides opportunities for medical students to connect with nature and learn about wilderness medicine through outdoor adventures, procedure workshops, and participation in a MedWAR challenge.
WUMS Plus
WUMS Plus is designed to help build community for students who are navigating how to balance the demands of medical school with important relationships outside of the hospital. The group will aim to connect students who have partners/spouses who are both in and out of the medical field, as well as students who are parents too. Some goals of the group would be to help expectant parents learn about all of the medical school resources for student-parents and connect them with current student parents, connect students in new relationships and how to balance dating and medical school demands, connect families with young children to one another to build community, provide opportunities for students to hear how other students and their partners have navigated long-distance relationships, matching in different cities, being off-cycle with respect to residency applications, etc.
WUSM Dance
WUSM Dance is a free-flowing community of medical students with a passion for dance and music.
WUSM Film Society
The purpose of WUSM Film Society is to celebrate interdisciplinary learning and critical discussion of medically relevant issues through the medium of film, documentary, and video screenings.
WUSM Sustainability
WUSM Sustainability works to promote and achieve greater sustainability in WUSM and the greater medical school community through initiatives (e.g. reusable anatomy gloves), educational interventions (e.g. Climate Change series), and collaboration.
WUSM Wine Society
The WUSM Wine Society seeks to foster an appreciation for and knowledge of the art of wine-making and wine-tasting. Through various educational lessons, the Wine Society aims to bring students together to learn about various types of wine, how to taste and identify tasting notes, and develop their wine palates.
WUSM-GO
Wash U School of Medicine Gaming Club! Organized by medical students to provide opportunities to play video games and board games with each other and faculty.
